CNTE Teachers Call for National Strike in Mexico City

The president announced that dialogue with the teachers of the CNTE will be restarted, as they had not agreed on the dates. The teachers have called for a national strike of 72 hours from March 19 to 21, but this measure could be modified after a scheduled meeting on Tuesday the 18th in Mexico City.

In previous days, CNTE teachers protested against the ISSSTE Law and other demands. Among the teachers' requests are the elimination of this law which proposes increasing contributions from state workers, the calculation of pensions in pesos instead of UMA, the reinstatement of dismissed teachers, early retirement, and salary increases.

Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the reform to the ISSSTE does not affect teachers, but rather trusted workers. In response to the protests, the president will meet with CNTE leaders on March 18 at the National Palace to address the issue of the ISSSTE Law and resume dialogue.

During a visit to Huimanguillo, Tabasco, Sheinbaum confirmed the meeting with the teachers. In Chiapas, members of section 7 of the CNTE expressed their disagreement with the law, and the president offered them the possibility of a meeting, which will take place in the coming days.
